Optional extras…
I chose to line the project folder with a patchwork of antique french floral fabrics that I stitched together randomly to create a piece of fabric large enough to equal the size of the embroidered linen. These fabrics are beautiful, timeworn, and treasured, and show signs of their former lives in their creases, pinprick holes and fading, but if you are anything like me, these imperfections only add to their beauty.
On check-out, you have the option to purchase the folder kit alone (and use a lining fabric from your own stash), or to add one of a selection of whole-cloth antique french fabrics large enough to line your folder. It is not possible to select a particular fabric (although if you have a preference, you can always make a request at the time of ordering and I will always try to include the one you like if it’s still available), but the add-on menu allows you to select a particular aesthetic eg. Vintage paper-pieced quilt top, Pink florals, blue toiles, pink or blue Vichy check / stripe etc.
Our stash of antique french fabric available as an add-on for this kit comes from dealers who buy their inventory at France’s brocantes. It is carefully laundered and rejuvenated when it reaches What Florence Did Next, but if your leaning veers closer to newness and perfection, these fabrics may not be for you. Due to their age and former use, it is likely that there will be signs of wear, fading, rust marks etc
It is also worth considering that a lining of antique fabric may not be for you if you are on a tighter budget - suitable fabrics are becoming increasingly rare and the price is creeping up all the time - but this piece feels special enough to delve into the treasure chest of antique fabrics for a one-of-a-kind show-stopping lining.
Can I stitch this?
There are a number of different embroidery stitches used in this kit, including a selection of more advanced stitches. YouTube is always a great resource for demonstrations if you are unsure how to complete a certain stitch, or if you are feeling daunted, reach out to us and we’ll help you to simplify the more complicated areas for stitches you are more comfortable with.
Is this sized to fit the heirloom bunting?
Heavens no! She’s a big girl, sized to fit a What Florence Did Next embroidery kit (including the folder and instructions), along with a small sewing kit. That way, once you have finished making your folder, you can slip your next project in, pop it in your bag, and you’ll be ready to get stitching wherever you are.
